“HE’S not your enemy,” Remy said quietly. Adam knew exactly who he
was talking about, even though neither of them had mentioned his name. They were in their rooftop sanctuary, so Adam let himself speak freely. “Does he know that? Because he’s sure seemed like an enemy in the past!”
“He disagreed with you. He still does, probably, and I’m sure he will again. That doesn’t make him your enemy, Challoner.”
“He’s power-hungry—”
“I don’t think so.”
“Sneaky—”
“I haven’t seen that.”
“Manipulative—”
“Not really.”
“Annoying—”
“Obviously.” Remy’s smile was sweet, his gentle kiss even sweeter. “I’ve been working with him. And Dar had some information on him too. Did you know that he was born to a factory worker? He had a sister, but she died of some undiagnosed illness when he was twelve. He had to scramble and fight for his education and his chance at success.” Remy gave Adam another kiss, a clear reward for having listened to the tale of Morgan’s nobility. “He’s a fighter, and he’s more focused on the practical side of things than you are. But he wants what’s best for the country. And so do you. So in the long run, you’re on the same side. And he voted for you this morning because he knows that your voice is needed on the council. He trusts you more than he trusts the general.”
“I wonder what kind of conversation those two are having right now.”
“Probably not this kind,” Remy whispered, and the kiss this time was deeper and damn it, if Remy wasn’t enjoying it, he was an even better actor than Adam gave him credit for. But Remy was the one to pull away, leaving Adam leaning after him, wanting more. “I want to take you somewhere,” Remy said. “To see someone. It’s not far, but it’s a bit risky. I don’t think we should take security. I think it’ll be safer if they don’t know where we are.”
“What are you up to, Remy?”
“I’ve been following up on Dar’s leads. I talked to the hackers from the revolution. You know what they said when I contacted them? They asked what had taken so long. Dar had already been in touch with them and asked for their help. He’d even given them my name as someone to trust. And they gave me some really good information. I mean, powerful, useful information. It’s not good, exactly, or at least you won’t think so.”
“And that’s where you want us to go, now? To see them?”
“No.” Remy made a strange face, and it took Adam a moment to realize that it was his version of being nervous. The man had spent his life covering up his fear, and now he was being brave enough to expose it to Adam. It seemed like another milestone, but there was no time to celebrate, and Remy’s next words washed the joy out of Adam anyway. “I want to go see Mr. Baryman.”
“Baryman.” Adam tried to make sense of it. “The man who bought you as a child, made you a sex slave, and tortured you for his own amusement.
